What’s new News Newcastle Building Society and Daisy Chain to host autism friendly day in Yarm The region’s biggest building society is hosting an autism friendly day in its most innovative partnership branch. On 17 March, Newcastle Building Society’s Yarm branch, in collaboration with Daisy Chain, will be hosting an autism friendly day for up to 10 children to take part in an Easter themed craft session. Daisy Chain was established in 2003 to help support children with autism, offering a haven where they could experience something in life that would give them pleasure. It would also offer parents and carers support and resources. The session will be hosted after normal Saturday opening hours (between 1-3pm) to provide a quiet environment for the children to enjoy an hour of crafting, followed by an hour of free time in the library. Newcastle Building Society’s ‘branch in a library’, in partnership with Stockton-On-Tees Borough Council, is the first of its kind in the UK, and offers a full range of savings and mortgage services, along with professional, convenient and accessible on-site financial advice, through its subsidiary, Newcastle Financial Services.* Financial adviser, Lee Metters will be volunteering at the event, alongside branch manager, Kimberley Saunders, assistant branch manager, Helena Kalandra and the library branch manager Cath Watkins. Kimberley Saunders, Yarm’s branch manager said: “When Daisy Chain first approached us with the idea of hosting an autism friendly day we jumped at the opportunity to deliver it alongside our library colleagues. “Hosting the event after the library’s usual opening hours, will give the children the opportunity to experience a quiet environment while doing something they enjoy, whether it’s crafts or reading. If the session goes well and proves really popular, there is a possibility that we can make it a monthly session. Holly Abbott, corporate partnership manager at Daisy Chain, said: “Here at Daisy Chain we’re thrilled that Newcastle Building Society are holding their own autism friendly session at their Yarm branch. “We know our families can struggle to find places to go and enjoy time together as a family. By holding this session the Newcastle Building Society and Yarm Library will be giving families the opportunity to enjoy time together in a safe environment. They’re also demonstrating how to break down barriers between businesses and people with autism which is a vital part of Daisy Chain’s mission. We are really grateful to Newcastle Building Society and all of their staff for putting this activity session together.” If you’re interested in attending the event please call Daisy Chain to book on 01642 531248.
