The situation with COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown is having a huge impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of families, young people and adults affected by autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Throughout this period, many will become isolated from the peer support and social interaction that is so beneficial to them, both as individuals and as a family. Added to this, the disruption in structure of daily routines with recommendations of home-working and school closures being enforced, new restricted ways of communication and the potential of sensory overload will all lead to increased stress and anxiety of how to cope in the current climate.

Here at Daisy Chain, having been forced to close our face-to-face services, we have maintained our front line of support by launching a telephone crisis line. Callers have access to our specialist trained care staff who have developed a wealth of support materials and tools to help combat those issues being faced by young people, adults and families of those affected by neurodevelopmental disorders.

In addition to this, our specialist staff are hosting Zoom video meetings with individuals and groups for those who feel more comfortable with face-to-face interaction, and to enable peer group support with others to combat loneliness and isolation during these difficult times.

We are determined to ensure that no one affected by autism is left unsupported whilst also ensuring our NHS colleagues are shielded from a greater influx of crisis in mental health ASD cases.

During these times, we must also consider the financial implications of the virus and the damaging impact on the charity. The pandemic we find ourselves in has had a detrimental effect on our finances, with the expected loss in income of £400,000 following the suspension of fundraising activities and closure of our charity Superstore. This income is vital to Daisy Chain in order to ensure that we can continue to provide vulnerable families, children and adults living in the Tees Valley the support they so desperately need.

We need your support to raise these vital funds.

We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from the local community, businesses and individuals over the years, and Daisy Chain wouldn’t be where it is today without that commitment. We hope that this dedication from our supporters will continue to help us through this increasingly difficult time.

We are aware of the financial concerns that people and businesses are experiencing during this time, but also heartened by the kindness, community spirit and support of others that has been widely shown to help us all get through this difficult time together.

Please donate whatever you can, by clicking the Donate button at the top of this page, to ensure that we can continue to support our families, now and into the future.

Thank you and stay safe.
