As the new Volunteer Development Manager here at Daisy Chain, I am on a mission to recruit more volunteers for the many and varied volunteering opportunities we can offer as an organisation.
Volunteers play a crucial part in the organisation and the services we can offer to support families affected by autism. My role is to increase the numbers of volunteers to help Daisy Chain manage the increasing demand for services from families.
However, there are so many different ways volunteers can get involved with us and learn new skills. We have roles available both at our charity Superstore which raises funds for Daisy Chain as well as at our farm and day centre site in Norton where we work with families.
Volunteering is an excellent way to both give and receive – we value the time and commitment from our team of volunteers and in turn we ensure they get training and skills development in return. We listen to our volunteers to find out what they want to offer and what they want to learn and take from the experience.
We have an open-door policy so volunteers can call in and visit to find out more information and have a chat. Quite often potential volunteers are unaware of the roles we can offer – from sorting donations, assembling creative displays in store and learning all things retail in the Superstore to working with children and young people with autism, working on our farm with the animals or on our 5.5 acre site.
Just some of the ways in which we can help, is to look at possible career pathways, ensure volunteers have the chance to meet with each other in peer learning groups and we will be looking to offer mentoring from established and experienced volunteers in the near future.
Our goal is to nurture a successful volunteering journey whatever opportunity and route the volunteer wants to follow by setting clear recruitment policies and a structure that ensures all our volunteers gain an excellent experience while they are supporting Daisy Chain.
